Vukvol, the son of a famous carver Halmo, applied his talents to different areas of art – engraving, bone sculpture, and book graphics. This chess set was dedicated to the animal world of Chukotka. Expressive images of animals standing on their hind paws fascinate with their unique plasticity that is characteristic for ancient carving traditions. The author gives the animals certain human features – this must reflect the influence of the Chukchi and the Eskimo beliefs about the common nature and links between a man and a beast. Chess figurines have prominence and monumentality regardless their small size.
