Yakutia boasts huge deposits of mammoth bone, and the locals have been using it for making various objects and trinkets since ancient times. In the 18th century settlers from the Russian North brought here artistic bone carving techniques. The first works of the local masters resembled those of Kholmogory school, but soon they acquired their own bright and unique character reflecting the ancient artistic culture of the region. The creative work of Yakut carvers in the second half of the 18th – 19th centuries was characterized by decorativeness, symbolism and unusual plastic expressiveness, as well as by the use of fantastic images.
