Alexey Georgievich Sotnikov (1904-1989) was mainly known as animalist sculpture and as one of the founders of monumental porcelain plastic art, a fine example of which is the sculpture A Lion in the Circus. A majestic figure of the lion stands on four paws. The animal's head is turned back and the mouth is open. The monumental nature of the sculpture is emphasized by under-glaze covering of certain parts – the mane, the paws, and the tail.
