I.K. Balakin studied at Mstyora professional artistic school (1936- 1940), was the member of the group "Proletarian Art", and worked as a tutor at Mstyora professional artistic school (1947- 1948). In 1941 he volunteered as a soldier, became a field engineer and fought in the battle for Prague. After the war he designed memorials for fallen soldiers at his own initiative. In the art of miniature he created his own unique "Balakin-style" manner of painting.
