“The Peoples of Russia” sculpture series is one of the most significant works of J.-D. Rachette, who was in charge of the sculpture workshop of the Imperial Porcelain Factory from 1779 to 1809.

The series was based on “The Description of the Peoples Living in Russia, Their Traditions, Faith, Houses, Clothes and other Things of Value”, a research by the famous ethnographer I.-G. Georgi (1729-1802) published in 1777. Over a hundred illustrations included in the publication were made on the basis of onsite drawings made by different travelers and on the materials kept in Kunstkamera.
